Photo Detector
E7815 consists of a photodiode and a signal processing circuit for amplifying the photocurrent generated from the photodiode up to 1400 times. Despite a small active area, E7815 provides an output nearly equal to that from photodiodes with a 20 × 20 mm active area. E7815 can be used the same way as a reverse-biased photodiode, and in most cases, it delivers a sufficient output voltage by just connecting a load resistor.

How a Photodiode Works
A photodiode receives light. The photodiode is a type of photo detector capable of converting light into either current or voltage, depending upon the mode of operation. The photodiode can captures variations of light intensity and pick up a signal carried by a modulated light beam.
Photodiodes are similar to regular semiconductor diodes except that they may be either exposed or packaged with a window to allow light to reach the sensitive part of the device. Many diodes designed for use specifically as a photodiode will also use a PIN junction rather than the typical PN junction.......more

Due to the intrinsic layer, a PIN photodiode must be reverse biased (Vr). The Vr increases the depletion region allowing a larger volume for electron-hole pair production, and reduces the capacitance thereby increasing the bandwidth
